Ep 138 – Infants on Mormon Stories – Pt 1

Posted December 14th, 2014

In this two-part series John Dehlin joins us for a discussion about… us.  He also says a really bad word, or three.

  • Spencer Williams

Circle jerk of Mormon online personalities. Yay.

    • Craig Keeling

It’s always comes down to masturbation for you, Spencer! 😉

  • Craig Keeling

BKP is too sexy for that substance. I love hearing that montage 😀

I shook BKP’s hand once on my mission. All I could think in that moment is how deep his jedi mind tricks could burn into my subconscious and bust me for thought crimes. We were told beforehand to not say anything to him. I broke that rule to throw him off. Checkmate, BKP.

  • Brandon

Michael Coe and Grant Palmer Yep. But what about Daymon Smith’s episode on correlation? Or the two or three? episodes with Michael Quinn? Hearing how the church functioned moved me from it’s not only not true, it’s also pretty under-handed

    • Glenn

yep, the Datmon Smith one was huge. I remember listening to it in Tokyo, Japan, while watching a live sumo tournament. I couldn’t turn it off. It was amazing. There are a ton.

    • Matt

So hard to pick just one. I’d also include “How church takes things from you and sells them back to you” (or something like that) on Mormon expression. It was the first time I really grasped how sinister and damaging the concept of “natural man is an enemy to god” really is.

  • Cyn

Wow! This is great! I’m a 67 year old female who left the church two years ago. I heard about Infants on Thrones last year. I’ve been listening ever since, and have listened to the episodes in the archives. At first the language kind of bothered me and I felt like I was eavesdropping on conversations my sons-in-law were having. I got over it. I listen to podcasts while I work. My main interest is history in general and Mormonism. I listen to The History Guys and History Extra, The History Chicks, Irish History Podcast, Infants on Thrones, Mormon Stories, Mormon Expression, Mormon Expositor, Feminist Mormon Housewives and several others. I like the format you use. I like the occasional female guest, but wouldn’t want you to add a token female. We woman are not all the same and one representative would not be pleasing to all of us. My favorite podcasts are those where the personalities involved shine threw and I feel that I’m listening in on genuine conversations. That may be voyeuristic on my part, but that is what I like. At this point, Glenn could edit in a song “don’t change a hair for me, not if you care for me, stay little (infants) stay”. Or to quote Mr. Rogers, “I like you just the way you are”. If I hear something I don’t like……. I have a button. Thank you for a great year of entertainment and sometimes enlightenment.

  • Brandon

All those IOT episodes were great. I agree the episodes by individual infants are superlative (ha!). I think my favorite individual was Glenn’s Regret followed by Coffee, Jake’s testimony, and the one where Matt and his wife Kristin discuss how the change from Mormon paradigm affected their view of their “how-we-married” story (such great chemistry). Honorable mention goes to Nick’s Death essay re: coming to terms w/ mortality (and also the related Matt/Kristin episode – you two are so darn cute.) Oh and the Beer listener episode. Dammit…they’re all good. Lest Bob feel left out…I think I’ve worn out the Queens of the Stone Age “No One Knows” youtube video. Thanks!

Could we get a link to the In Sacred Loneliness review that is mentioned?

  • Orrin Dayne

I love the Infants on Thrones name. Let me say that upfront. However, after finding Mormon Stories earlier this year with all the Dehlin press coverage, I searched for other podcasts with “Mormon” or “LDS” and didn’t discover this podcast. I did, however, find Mormon Expression and eventually found IOT when someone commented about you on the Mormon Expression board.

There is no doubt in my mind that people didn’t find IOT because “they knew not where to find it.” That said, appearing on Mormon Stories should make up for the fact that “Mormon” is not in the title in the future.

  • Orrin Dayne

I wholeheartedly agree with Randy about the intro to the BOA smackdown episode 1. It was so wonderful.

  • Great stuff guys! I haven’t listened to many Mormon Stories admittedly. But I really enjoyed this.
And I have agree with you guys about doing this how you want and not doing what others think you should do. I love the format. I love when its just you guys hanging out and talking. For someone who doesn’t have anyone close who is like me, I can turn on this podcast and just hang out with you guys. It’s great to bring people on from time to time, to get other’s thoughts. But like the old saying goes: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
