Re: Millett and the teaching of sealed parents saving their wayward children. I was at BYU when I first heard this. One of Millett’s essays was shared by a professor who taught the D&C. He took pains to parse out the language of D&C 138, and emphasized the phrase ‘the dead who repent will be redeemed’. He also taught that this meant even members who fall away during mortality would have a chance at complete forgiveness.

Despite Packer’s interpretation of ‘forgiveness-lite’, which essentially meant that forgiveness still meant a punishment in a lesser kingdom, I took the Millett doctrine to heart and ran with it for a couple of decades. I used it when my grandparents worried about their son who died while away from the church, and would highlight it every time section 138 was covered in gospel doctrine (Oh yes, I was THAT member). It is a very comforting teaching. I hope it brings peace to my mom.

When Christian missionaries first started showing up in China, the emperor ordered a court official to investigate Christianity and report back. After investigating, the official summed up Christianity as a practice that makes dumb people smarter and smart people dumber.

Maybe if the angry atheist author viewed Christianity through this paradigm he might calm down a bit. Perhaps it is in the best interest of society that people ignorant enough to believe in superstitious hooey, are simultaneously constrained from robbing liquor stores and running amok.
