How do you heal after an excommunication? Matt talks with Carson and Marisa Calderwood about finding healing and community through EDM music and culture.

Matt

I’ve been asked several times about the songs in the intro and ending. They are.. first by Kaskade, Disarm you. The last one was Be free by Aero Chord & Klaypex

I’m really happy for the Calderwoods and the joy they have found in their new community. So often we hear about people longing for social support beyond Mormonism. It’s not every day you hear about music culture helping to heal those wounds.

As a TBM, I regularly attended DC area EDM events in the early 2000’s. One caveat I would add is that the EDM experience can be highly subjective depending on your region and sub-genre. For me, the PLUR vibe described in this podcast was pretty much absent.

Here’s the backstory. There were two rival clubs: Buzz and Glow. Buzz catered to the drum & bass, techno, and house crowd whereas Glow favored Dutch trance. Kandi kids almost exclusively went to Buzz. The khakis and dress shoe wearing crowd went to Glow (sneakers weren’t allowed). Since I attended Glow more, I never had much contact with Kandi kids. The vibe was still fun, and Glow ended up winning out in the end. Buzz shut down for good 11 years ago whereas Glow pretty much has the monopoly on DC-area EDM.

To Matt’s point about people our age (Gen X-ers/Gen Y-ers) hating EDM, I would add that a lot of my Gen-Y friends hated EDM even back when we were in high school. I think favorability towards the genre tends to be a cultural thing. People generally like what they are exposed to in their youth. Now that radio stations have less of a stranglehold on what music people listen to, we’re seeing newer generations experiment with genres that never before existed.

Lastly, let’s all listen to Ali G give us the real rundown of drugs in EDM. Aight! 😂 https://youtu.be/DduAbLpZDHg?t=2m37s
